IVC filters are small cage-like devices inserted into the inferior vena cava to catch blood clots and prevent pulmonary embolism. Retrievable filters are intended to be removed once the clot risk passes, but many remain in place for years.

Complications include filter fracture (struts breaking off and traveling to the heart or lungs), device migration, vena cava perforation, and difficulty with retrieval. Cook Celect and Gunther Tulip filters are among the most litigated.

If you have an IVC filter and have experienced complications, confirm the make and model from your medical records, follow up with your vascular surgeon, and speak with counsel about your options.
