Exactech recalled thousands of knee, hip, and shoulder replacement implants in 2021 and 2022 because the polyethylene components were packaged in oxygen-permeable bags that allowed the plastic to oxidize and weaken before implantation.

The defective packaging led to accelerated wear of the polyethylene liner, resulting in premature implant failure, osteolysis, and need for revision surgery years earlier than expected.
