Elmiron (pentosan polysulfate sodium) is the only oral medication approved for interstitial cystitis, a chronic bladder condition. Prolonged use has been linked to pigmentary maculopathy, a condition that damages the retina and can cause vision loss.

Symptoms include difficulty reading, blurred vision, distorted vision (metamorphopsia), and delayed dark adaptation. The damage can continue even after stopping the drug.

If you took Elmiron and have been diagnosed with maculopathy or vision changes, you should see a retinal specialist and preserve your prescribing records. Speak with counsel about filing deadlines.
