Depo-Provera (medroxyprogesterone acetate) is an injectable contraceptive used by millions of women. French and European epidemiological studies found that long-term use is associated with an increased risk of intracranial meningiomas, mostly benign brain tumors.

The risk appears highest in women who used Depo-Provera for more than one year. The FDA updated the prescribing label to include this safety signal in 2025.

If you used Depo-Provera long-term and were diagnosed with a meningioma, discuss alternative contraception with your provider and speak with counsel about your legal options.
