## Overview

Elmiron (pentosan polysulfate sodium) is an oral drug used for bladder pain syndrome / interstitial cystitis. Litigation alleges long-term use can cause a pattern of retinal injury sometimes described as pigmentary maculopathy, with symptoms overlapping macular degeneration.

### Alleged injury pattern

Complaints describe difficulty reading, prolonged dark adaptation, distorted central vision, and abnormal findings on multimodal retinal imaging. Defendants dispute general causation, confounding eye disease, and prescribing appropriateness.

Ophthalmology follow-up and high-quality imaging are critical to distinguish medication-associated changes from age-related macular degeneration or other pathology.

### Federal coordination

Related cases have been centralized in MDL No. 2973 in the District of New Jersey. As with other MDLs, schedules evolve with discovery, expert challenges, and rulings on admissibility.
